"The Reports of the Adventures of Squid Sensei" is drawn and written by Darryl Knickrehm, an American independent film maker living in Japan. However, due to the nature of being an indie (and living in Japan), Darryl has been forced to teach English to put food on the table. In 2009, during the middle of the swine-flu panic, classes were shut down for a week in all of Kobe (and part of Osaka) because 1 child caught the flu. Thanks to this hypochondriactic reaction, Darryl had to fill time at work somehow, so doodles ensued. Being an avid drawer as a child, it had been over 15 years since Darryl had tried drawing anything, but his creativity was finally unleashed and Squid Sensei was the result. Most issues being drawn at work with ballpoint pen, the true life frustrations and craziness of teaching English became the topic of Squid-Sensei. Gathering stories from other teachers, and based on many personal experiences, each story is a bizarre look at the reality of teaching in another country.
